I’m so proud and excited to bring you a new zine: Doodles & Designs. This zine came out of my love for including zen doodles and little designs in a lot of my art work. But sometimes I just get so frustrated when I can’t think of any designs, so I just end up going back to dots and dashes. Now, I have a little booklet that I can flip through to look for design ideas whenever I’m at a loss. The zine includes instructions for two meditative art activities designed to use the doodles included inside, and a few suggestions for tools and materials. At 40 pages, it’s my longest zine so far and each page is full of handmade designs and doodles just ready to help you in your art!
This is a quarter-size zine (5.5.x 4.25 inches). Tuck this sourcebook in with your sketchbook and take it wherever you do your doodling.
Suggested Materials List:
When I am doodling, I am mainly using the supplies below.
* Pitt Pens: these are my favorites, I love them so much. I use the 03, 05, brush, and the marker tip ones the most. I use these on a daily basis. I also use the big brush. I love it for doodling over larger scale acrylic paintings. There’s so much you can do with these! There are also some white ones now, so this could make your doodle pen collection complete!
* I also really like the Signo Uniball white, gold, and silver gel pens to add some embellishments. I have tried all of the different gel pens, and I really think these are the best!
In addition, for the projects included in the zine, you will need a surface to create on and something to create color. I offer suggestions of using brush markers or watercolors.
For Watercolors:
* You will want a nice watercolor paper – I like it to at least 110lb or more so that it’s nice and heavyweight and can be used as a postcard or as a standalone piece of art. Here are some cards that are already cut to size and have the postcard on the back. But you could also get some 6×9 or 9×12 sheets like these, and cut them to size, which is what I do.
* This is a nice inexpensive watercolor set that I really like. It has nice pan size, a good number of colors, nice pigment – it’s really nice.
* Or you could go with Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors, which are also really really nice, with an even larger pan, and pretty colors. But they are more expensive. They are also more opaque, so something to think about.
For Markers:
* Again, I think you want to use a nice thick paper. I really like this 120lb bristol board. It’s very smooth and won’t tear up the brushes on your pens.
* For markers, I think the brush tips are the best for the projects I’ve included in this zine. I love Tombow brush pens, but dang they are expensive! Try to get them on sale – but there’s a total of 108 colors, which is really nice.
* Alternatively, Staedtler brush pens are also really nice. In fact, I think the tip might outlast the Tombow’s. Unfortunately, there’s only 36 colors though. But they’re very affordable.
